UK renters feel increasingly insecure, while household confidence shows faint signs of recovery, according to a Bloomberg Intelligence report highlighting the economic divide created by the UK’s dual housing market. A BI survey conducted in August found that UK renters made up the majority of those who reported being very worried about their finances — a disproportionate share given that they represent about a third of UK households. Renters were more anxious than a year ago, while homeowners were less concerned. ‘Renters tend to be less resilient to financial stress than homeowners, and the confidence gap has widened,’ the report authors wrote. Weak household confidence has weighed on the UK economy in recent years, as consumers account for about 60% of gross domestic product.
