Scientists have raised concerns after Lake Mornos was recorded at its smallest surface area since 2014, observed during the first ten days of September 2025. According to meteo.gr and the National Observatory of Athens, the observation was made on September 9, 2025, using satellite data from Sentinel-2. The current surface area is approximately 8.9 square kilometers, down from 11.4 square kilometers in September 2024 and 15.3 square kilometers in 2023. The METEO/NOA team also reports rainfall data through two meteorological stations located near the lake. To better monitor the situation, a new public observatory has been launched: the Mornos Artificial Lake Observatory (www.meteo.gr/mornos), which provides updated satellite imagery and environmental data every 15 days.
