US proposal for new G7 sanctions on the Russian energy market
[]
Athens Times
The US will urge its allies in the G-7 to impose tariffs of up to 100% on China and India for purchases of Russian oil.
This proposal is part of broader efforts to exert economic pressure on Russia, aiming to convince Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.
Alongside the tariff proposal, the US will call on G-7 countries to examine the legal possibility of seizing immobilized Russian state assets, which could be used to support Ukrainian defense.
It is recalled that most of the approximately $300 billion in frozen Russian assets are located in Europe, according to Bloomberg.
The proposal is challenging given that many EU nations, including Hungary, have blocked stricter sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector.
