President Bola Tinubu’s chief tax adviser, Taiwo Oyedele, has said that all Nigerians, including sex workers, will be required to pay tax under the new fiscal reforms set to take effect from January 2026. According to Mr Oyedele, who chairs the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policies and Reforms, the new law makes no distinction between legitimate and illegitimate sources of income. “They will pay tax on it.”He added that the principle of the new law is straightforward: “The tax law doesn’t separate whether what you’re doing is legitimate or not; it doesn’t even ask you. You pay tax.”Prostitution and related activities have historically remained outside Nigeria’s tax net, but Mr Tinubu’s administration is signalling a readiness to capture every potential revenue stream as it works to stabilise the economy. The reforms will also affect social media influencers and Nigerians working remotely for foreign companies and earning in foreign currency.
