“I cannot therefore continue to represent you as your councillor for the ward of Fort William.”Councillor Sarah Fanet.
“I'll be leaving the Highlands but the Highlands will not leave me and I will be watching very closely.”She became the first openly transgender elected councillor when she won the by-election in December 2021 and again in February 2025 but she did not want her political career to revolve around her transition.
During her time representing the residents of Fort William and Ardamurchan, she was vice chair for the climate change committee and sat on the education, Gaelic and Lochaber committees.
