The Rescue Mission, a non-profit organization that has served homeless individuals since 1955, asked for proof of the dog’s service training—a requirement not mandated by California law. In addition to paying the settlement, the Rescue Mission must now update its animal policy and ensure staff receive training on the rights of disabled individuals, particularly regarding assistance animals. A 2022 California law has made it easier for homeless individuals to bring emotional Support animals into shelters and public spaces. The Rescue Mission has indicated that while it accommodates Support and service animals, certain limitations exist at its downtown location due to space constraints.
