PULLMAN — Near the end of a recent interview, retired Pullman High School track and field coach Mike Hinz divulged a secret about his ceaselessly stoic demeanor, especially during Washington 2A state meets.
Former track athletes will surely dominate the scene.
Facades aside, Hinz embodied a resolute lack of obvious emotion during his approximately 35 years as a Pullman High head or assistant track coach until his retirement last year.
“The key to a big performance at the big meets is to not try too hard.
For one thing, he spent 47 years as a high school football official, while spending nearly three decades manning the first-down chains for Washington State University football until his retirement last year.
