Bacteria is eating away at the surface of the Oslofjord tunnelThe deterioration of fibre-reinforced sprayed concrete has been studied in the Oslofjord subsea tunnel in Norway.
This can lead to high costs and the risk of damage if stone and concrete drop from the tunnel roof.
This is a process which carries bacteria into the tunnel environment and these bacteria then form colonies – biofilms – on the surface of the concrete.
The Chalmers scientists studied the Oslofjord Tunnel in Norway and discovered new insights about the microbiological processes behind the degradation.
While the research was specifically focused on the Oslofjord Tunnel, the researchers believe that the phenomenon probably occurs in similar environments around the world.
