A partnership between St Helens Police, St Helens Borough Council and local licensed premises has led to a 19 per cent reduction in assaults and a 35 per cent drop in other crimes at licensed premises. St Helens Borough Council has supported the effort with its own ‘Safe Nights, Great Places’ campaign, promoting the town as a secure and vibrant evening destination. The campaign highlights St Helens’ Purple Flag accreditation, a national standard recognising towns and cities that offer a safe and well-managed night-time environment. The introduction of a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) in the town centre has also given police extra powers to tackle alcohol-related anti-social behaviour.
