Detective Chief Inspector Jason Pye told an inquiry into the attack that a dedicated team of 80 officers was assigned to work for him, 37 of them assigned to supporting families of those affected. The inquiry team spoke to 547 witnesses, compiled 1,244 exhibits and read through 159,000 messages, the majority of which were in Rwandan, he said. Inquiry chairman Sir Adrian Fulford told him: “It tends to be forgotten that these events can take a toll even on experienced investigating officers. “You have needed to liaise with a significant number of extremely distressed individuals, and to understand the fine detail of these extremely disturbing events. “You had to delve, as you’ve told us this morning, insofar as one is able, into AR’s depraved motivation and the horrors that he was researching on the internet.
