LERWICK Town Hall has lit up green tonight (Wednesday) to mark world suicide prevention day, which is globally observed on 10 September. The theme of the awareness raising initiative is ‘changing the narrative on suicide’. Increasing people’s confidence to talk about suicide is one way to shift from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding and support. Laura Russell of NHS Shetland’s health improvement team said: “We know that having thoughts of suicide is common in Scotland. Shout – a free, confidential, 24/7 text support service for anyone in the UK who is struggling to cope.
