Near Covent Garden is one of the oldest Scottish Churches in London, and one that is only occasionally open to the public. That probably used a chapel in Scotland Yard, a Whitechapel courtyard that also served as the diplomatic base for the Scottish government’s representatives in England. The earliest formal record of the Kirk of the Crown of Scotland (although better known as the Crown Court Church of Scotland), dates to 1710 with a reference to a church in Peter’s Court, Whitehall, but in 1718 they bought a plot of land near Covent Garden for a church to be built and opened it a year later. The old church interior was previously arranged with seating in a semi-circle facing the long wall, but during the rebuilding, it was internally laid out more conventionally. There’s also a second Church of Scotland in London, in Knightsbridge.
