Howard Payne University’s Department of Social work recently took part in Mission Waco’s Poverty Simulation, an experience in which the Social Work Program has participated for nearly 15 years. The immersive experience places students in real-life scenarios where they must navigate difficult choices faced by those living in poverty or facing homelessness. “The trip is valuable to our students by providing them with a powerful and eye-opening experience,” Oplotnik. “Visiting Mission Waco was truly an eye-opening experience that showed me resources are available, but not always accessible,” said Winn. Mission Waco creates a safe, controlled weekend of experiences that is designed to increase empathy for those living in poverty in America.
