During Tuesday’s meeting of the Brownwood City Council, Mayor Stephen Haynes read a proclamation declaring Sept. 23 as Sickle Cell Awareness Day. Haynes read and presented the proclamation to Charnita Hill, who at the Sept. 9 meeting addressed the Council regarding her 28-year-old daughter Naomi Scott and the challenges she faces having been afflicted with Sickle Cell Disease. Sickle cell anemia is a genetic blood disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. City employees posed along with Haynes and Hill in the background of the photo, many wearing the color burgundy which is the official color for Sickle Cell Awareness. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Stephen E. Haynes, Mayor of the City of Brownwood, Texas, along with the Brownwood City Council, do hereby proclaim September 23, 2025, as Sickle Cell Awareness Day in the City of Brownwood and encourage all citizens to wear burgundy in support of those affected by this disease, to learn more about Sickle Cell, and to join in advocating for improved care, treatment, and a cure.
