A hacker gained access to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s computer networks for several months earlier this year and stole information about FEMA and US Customs and Border Protection employees, according to an overview of the incident. The intruder breached FEMA’s Region 6, which includes Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, and the data was stolen from servers in the same region, according to the document. The handling of the breach prompted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to fire two dozen FEMA employees, including multiple IT executives, according to a person familiar with the incident. From there, the intruder stole information about employees at FEMA and Customs and Border Protection, another component of DHS.
