Greenwood Avenue safety project slammed in survey
['Clayton Franke']
The Bulletin
It’s been one year since the city of Bend transformed Greenwood Avenue by adding buffered bike lanes, safer crossings, left-hand turn lanes and taking away a driving lane in each direction to improve safety.
Meanwhile, a traffic study showed a 30-second increase in rush hour travel times, slower car speeds and a quadrupling in bicycle use.
The city council is scheduled to discuss Greenwood Avenue during a work session on Wednesday, along with other high-profile transportation projects.
The city is still working to combine data from all reports to show the yearlong view of how Greenwood performed, said Todd Johnson, project engineer.
But so far, the Greenwood project has bucked the science.
