Meanjin, Australia’s second oldest literary journal, will close down after running for 85 consecutive years. Melbourne University Publishing (MUP), the publisher of Meanjin, said that the decision was made based on “purely financial reasons”. Editor Esther Anatolitis and deputy editor Eli McClean were made redundant following this announcement. Meanjin has a rich history and was an important pillar in Australia’s complicated relationship with its literary culture. While other Australian literary publications still exist such as Southerly, Westerly, Overland, and the Griffith Review, Meanjin’s shutting down comes as a major loss to Australian arts and literature.
