My struggle to accept who I loved, less to others more to myself, was inextricably intertwined in the beliefs of “God’s Army”. The Salvation Army’s conflicting legacy of social action and faith has left me with more questions than answers. When someone first asked me the question, “Isn’t the Salvation Army homophobic?”, I actually didn’t know the answer. On The Army’s website, they have positional statements which present their organisation’s view on various social and ethical issues. The Salvation Army may have once promised salvation, but when it came to queerness, it chose damnation instead.
