Nostalgia: Defending Buckinghamshire in September 1905
['Mike Dewey']
Bucks Free Press | News
Chiltern Hills exerciseExactly 120 years ago this month, at the end of September 1905 there was an army exercise in the Chiltern Hills.
This exercise pretended that a foreign “Red” army had landed in north-west England and were advancing on London.
Due to limited budget, some of the “Red” enemy units around Dorchester-on-Thames were represented by just a few men with flags.
But the Red enemy at Dorchester-on-Thames sent an officer up in a man-lifting kite who could see all the trenches.
The Blues allowed a scout to be captured carrying two false notes supposedly giving the plan of attack, but the Red general was not fooled.
