The Fair used to be considered the most important social event in the town’s calendar and was attended by the whole town. The early FairIn 1613, a new Royal Charter for Amersham was granted to the then landowner, Edward Russell, Earl of Bedford. However, the Fair has been held on the September 19 and 20 ever since. Though the charters specify a two-day fair, the Fair took a day to set up and as it had to close at sunset on the actual fair day, it was really a one-day event. A compromise was eventually reached with new safety measures introduced and the Fair has continued on the High Street ever since.
