Dianne Smith: From The Messenger’s Files: Gellerstedt Brothers Published 5:44 pm Tuesday, September 30, 2025In 1899, it was reported that no two men who had done business in Troy were more widely and favorably known than Sam and Lawrence Gellerstedt.
The Gellerstedt Brothers employed 35 tailors who constantly filled orders from their various agencies throughout Alabama, as well as orders received by mail from customers.
Below is a preview of their business from the 1887 edition of the Troy Messenger.
In 1882, Messrs. Gellerstedt & Brown entered the clothing business, and in January 1887, Messrs. Gellerstedt Bros. acquired them.
Lawrence E. Gellerstedt and Mr. Sam Gellerstedt, both journeymen tailors, are well-versed in their business.
