The first to ask for an audit of Greek public debt was a group of Economists-Professors against the IMF in 2011. The Committee immediately started working on a review of Greek public debt and recently presented a Preliminary Report, details of which are used below. Along with the shock of the debt crisis, Greek society was bombarded with analyses about the causes of the debt, bickering over theory and talks of guilt and catharsis of all kinds. Nevertheless, George Papandreou’s government “by emphasizing and boosting the public deficit and debt in 2009 helped to present elements of a banking crisis as a sovereign debt crisis”.
