The 1745 Jacobite Rising has been so romanticised it is difficult not to get tangled up in retrospective interpretations and imagery. The MacLarens of Balquhidder were Jacobites by tradition but they also had a kinship connection with the Stewarts of Appin. It was an incredible escape and the location is now called MacLaren’s Leap. How he managed to make his way back to Balquhidder I have no space to explain here. What a perfect place it would be to tell this story after visiting MacLaren’s Leap.
