CHICAGO — The Padres will carry three catchers on their NL Wild Card Series roster. None of them will be Elias Díaz, who tweaked his left oblique on Saturday and will not play this round. Instead, Freddy Fermín will catch Nick Pivetta for the first time in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series and serve as the primary catcher for this best-of-three series. Luis Campusano and Martín Maldonado will serve as the backup options after scrambling to join the team after Díaz sustained his injury. Carrying three catchers prompted the Padres to go with 12 pitchers this round as left-handers Yuki Matsui and JP Sears were left off the wild-card roster.
