SULAIMANI,- The leader of Iraqi Kurdistan Region’s main opposition party, the New Generation Movement (NGM), was taken into custody Tuesday night in Sulaimani, according to the group’s media office. A Sulaimani police official said Shaswar Abdulwahid was detained on a judge’s order after repeatedly failing to appear in court. The New Generation Movement said Abdulwahid was taken at about 10 p.m. without prior notice. “We demand the immediate release of Shaswar Abdulwahid and insist he be treated according to legal procedures,” Salami said. In May 2019, he was detained after appearing before a court in Sulaimani on charges of blackmail and defamation.
