HEWLÊR-Erbil,—A court in Iraq’s northern Kurdistan region handed investigative journalist Sherwan Sherwani a new prison term on Tuesday, his lawyer said, just weeks before he was due for release from an earlier sentence. Sherwani, formerly the editor of Bashur magazine, is widely known for investigative reporting into government corruption. In February 2021, he and four other activists were sentenced to six years in prison on charges of “endangering national security.”The journalist later faced additional legal action. On Tuesday, the court imposed yet another sentence of four years and five months, citing accusations that Sherwani had threatened a prison guard, Abdallah told reporters. “From the beginning of Sherwan Sherwani’s case, the conditions of a fair trial were not ensured and political interference was evident,” the group said.
