The Higher Committee for People’s Assembly Elections said the vote, scheduled for mid-September, will exclude the southern province of Sweida and the northern provinces of Hasaka and Raqqa in Syrian Kurdistan (Rojava). The election is set to choose 210 members for the People’s Assembly between Sept. 15 and 20. Sweida, which is mostly Druze but also home to pro-Syrian government Islamist Sunni Bedouin tribes, has seen heavy violence in recent months. Hundreds of Druze civilians were killed in July during clashes between Druze fighters, pro Sharaa Sunni tribes, and government forces. Tensions between Druze and Sunni tribes in Sweida have long existed over land and resources.
