SULAIMANI, Iraqi Kurdistan,— A car plunged from Mount Azmar in Sulaimani city late Thursday, killing the driver, authorities said. On Friday, a helicopter deployed to recover the body crashed during the mission, leaving the pilot and an assistant injured, the Sulaimani Traffic Police Department said in a statement. The helicopter fell from an altitude of about 10 to 12 meters, a local volunteer assisting in the rescue effort told the media. Helicopter crashes are uncommon in the Kurdistan Region, according to local authorities. In March 2023, two helicopters carrying Anti-Terrorism Units of Syrian Kurdistan’s SDF forces crashed in Sulaimani, killing nine SDF members, officials said.
