ANKARA,— Turkey has instructed a parliamentary commission to complete preparations for a peace process with the Kurdish militant group PKK by the end of the year, the speaker of parliament said Friday. In July, PKK fighters began handing over their weapons in a symbolic ceremony in Iraqi Kurdistan. Following this, the Turkish parliament established a cross-party commission to oversee the emerging peace process. The initiative comes after months of indirect communication between the Turkish government and PKK founder Abdullah Ocalan, who has been imprisoned since 1999. The pro-Kurdish DEM has played a central role in the negotiations, regularly sending delegations to meet Ocalan on Imrali.
