BAGHDAD – Iraq has officially signed a contract to establish a new national mobile phone company that will provide fifth-generation (5G) services nationwide, under the patronage of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani. Public frustration with Iraq’s current telecom operators—including Asiacell, Zain (Atheer), and Korek, has been growing due to years of inconsistent service and network issues. Authorities anticipate that the launch of the new national mobile company will deliver substantial upgrades to the country’s telecommunications and IT infrastructure, addressing long-standing deficiencies. According to the Ministry of Communications, the modern network will also support startups and accelerate digital transformation in both public and private sectors, helping boost the country’s economic growth. “The National Mobile Phone Company project is highly feasible both economically and technically, playing an effective role in maximizing the state’s non-oil revenues,” she said.
