SULAIMANI,- A court in Iraq’s Kurdish region has sentenced opposition leader Shaswar Abdulwahid to five months in prison, his attorney said Tuesday.
Abdulwahid, a businessman-turned-politician, leads the New Generation party, which holds 15 seats in the 111-member Kurdish parliament and nine seats in Iraq’s federal legislature.
The party is considered the main rival to the Kurdistan Democratic Party KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan PUK, the two dominant factions in the autonomous region.
“The court sentenced Shaswar Abdulwahid to five months in prison,” attorney Bashdar Hasan told reporters, adding that an appeal will be filed.
According to court documents, 79 separate complaints have been brought against Abdulwahid.
