QAMISHLO,— Kurdish security forces in Syrian Kurdistan said Wednesday they prevented more than 50 people from escaping Al-Hol, a camp that houses individuals suspected of links to the Islamic State group.
According to Kurdish authorities in Rojava Kurdistan, 56 people tried to flee the facility on Tuesday afternoon in what was described as a mass escape attempt.
Security officials said the group, made up of several Islamic State families, tried to leave the camp using a large vehicle.
Another 6,300 foreign women and children from 42 countries are also housed there, camp director Jihan Hanan told AFP in August.
Iraq has repatriated about 17,000 of its citizens, mostly women and children, from the camp, Kurdish officials said.
