WASHINGTON,— U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday ordered the Department of Defense to be renamed the Department of War, reinstating the title used until the late 1940s.
“It’s really about winning.”Under the order, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is instructed to propose legislative or additional executive steps to make the renaming permanent.
The United States referred to its military command as the War Department until 1949, when lawmakers created the Department of Defense by combining the Army, Navy and Air Force.
Trump had suggested as early as June that he was considering renaming the Defense Department, saying its current title was meant to be “politically correct.”Some aides trace the effort back to his first administration.
Kash Patel, now FBI director and formerly a Pentagon official, used an email sign-off that referenced both the Secretary of Defense and the War Department.
