GUBA,— Ethiopia formally inaugurated the Grand Renaissance Dam on Tuesday, marking the completion of Africa’s largest hydroelectric project after more than a decade of construction. The structure has the capacity to store 74 billion cubic meters of water and generate 5,150 megawatts of electricity, more than doubling Ethiopia’s current output. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has previously described the dam as an “existential threat” and has vowed to defend the country’s water security through international measures. He dismissed concerns from Egypt and Sudan, emphasizing that hydroelectric dams release water for power generation rather than consume it. Ethiopia, meanwhile, has used the project as a symbol of strength amid ongoing domestic challenges.
