UNITED NATIONS,— The United Nations General Assembly voted Friday to endorse a declaration urging immediate steps toward creating a Palestinian state alongside Israel, a move that drew strong criticism from both Washington and Tel Aviv.
It follows a July U.N. conference convened by Saudi Arabia and France, which the United States and Israel boycotted.
The declaration condemns the October 7, 2023 Hamas assault in Israel that killed 1,200 people and led to the capture of about 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said the resolution demonstrated growing global rejection of Hamas.
He noted on X that the U.N. had, for the first time, adopted a document calling for Hamas to surrender and disarm.
