BAGHDAD,- The Iraqi intelligence agency said in a statement Friday that its officials are questioning 47 French citizens transferred from prisons in Syria’s Kurdish region over suspected ties to the Islamic State group.
“These individuals are members of Daesh,” the official said, using another name for the Islamic State IS/ISIS.
He added that investigators are relying on documents and testimony from Iraqi suspects linking the French nationals to crimes committed during IS’s occupation of Iraqi territory.
The National Intelligence Service confirmed the cases are proceeding under Iraqi jurisdiction.
In 2019, Iraqi judges sentenced 11 French citizens to death for membership in Islamic State.
