Now in its 13th year, this beloved tradition blends campus history, community spirit, and philanthropy to support UW–Madison’s most pressing needs. The roots of Fill the Hill trace back to 1979, when members of the satirical Pail and Shovel student government party planted 1,008 plastic flamingos on Bascom Hill as a prank. Over the years, Fill the Hill has raised more than $3.5 million through 21,000+ gifts. Contributions from Fill the Hill directly affect academic initiatives, scholarships, research, and even student organizations. Beyond dollars raised, Fill the Hill fosters a sense of unity and pride among Badgers worldwide.
