Moroccan director Layla Triqui’s film, “Carved By the Wind,” won the Écran d’Or grand prize on Saturday at the 29th Écrans Noirs Pan-African Film Festival held from September 20 to 27 in Yaoundé, Cameroon, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported. Other top awards included Best Short Film, given to “M’Tenga Yinga” by Mamadou Badalo, and Best Actress in a short film, awarded to Rosine Nguemgaing for her role in “Classe A Part.” The Écran award for Best Central African Feature went to “Mininals in a Titanic World” by Rwanda’s Philbert Aimé Mbabazi, while “Catcher” by Derhwa Kasunzu won Best International Documentary. Moroccan filmmakers competed with several works, including “This Jungo Life” by David Fedele and Aboubakar Ali, an Australia-Sudan-Morocco co-production in the Documentary category. Founded in 1997 by filmmaker Bassek Ba Kobhio, Écrans Noirs is an annual festival dedicated to promoting African cinema, particularly from Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, and Chad. The festival fosters cinematic culture, stimulates debate, encourages professional exchanges, and supports training in film and audiovisual careers.
