A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck late Tuesday off the coast of the Eastern Visayas region, about 100 kilometers from Cebu City, but authorities reported no tsunami threat or immediate damage. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers near the city of Bogo. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed the tremor did not trigger a tsunami. The quake rattled Cebu City, a metropolitan hub of nearly one million people in the central Philippines area. The Philippines sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a seismically active belt where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently.
