The United States government has finalized the seizing of more than one dozen Egyptian artifacts smuggled into the country illegally. and at least one of those shipments was bound for a private collector in Edgewater. Those items include stone figurines, jewelry, a vase and a statue valued at around $6 million. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents seized the items at airports in Alaska, Ohio, and New York City several years ago. “This litigation highlights one of the benefits of civil asset forfeiture and is an important milestone toward eliminating smuggled cultural property from the U.S. art market,” Kelly Hayes, U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, said in a news release.
