By contrast, tax lien certificates will carry simple interest — calculated only on the principal amount — at 6% for most homeowners and 11% for commercial or investment properties, per the county’s agreement. Other exemptions from the liens include properties with homestead status, homes valued under $100,000, debts under $1,000 and accounts already on payment plans.
