(WTAQ-WLUK) — State Republican lawmakers have introduced a new bill to give patients in Wisconsin access to legal medical cannabis.
The legislation was introduced by Senate President Mary Felzkowski (R-Tomahawk), Senator Patrick Testin (R-Stevens Point) and Representative Patrick Snyder (R-Weston).
It creates a program in Wisconsin to license growers, processors, labs, and dispensaries and includes safeguards to ensure that medical cannabis is not abused or accessed by those without a medical need.
Wisconsin Senate President Mary Felzkowski said:Someone who suffers from a serious health condition should not have to make the choice to travel to another state or break the law so they can try an alternative medicine for relief.
Some lawmakers said the previous measure was too conservative, while others say it didn’t reach far enough.
