Marking Anderson’s 10th feature film, “One Battle After Another” further establishes the celebrated director’s impressive body of work. The ambitious “One Battle After Another” belongs in the top tier of Anderson’s work, after “Boogie Nights.”At two hours and 41 minutes, “One Battle After Another” is a long film. It’s well-paced as the characters, like its title says, deal with one battle after another, allowing its epic story to breathe. If Anderson is reading this review (I doubt he is, but a critic can hope), Del Toro deserves his own film as the standout character. I heard and read comments saying, “the best movie of the year,” “Paul Thomas Anderson’s best film” and even “the best movie of the decade.” How do movies live up to those expectations?
