The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted to change recommendations for the measles, mumps, rubella and varicella (MMRV) vaccine. Currently, vaccines are available as separate MMR and varicella vaccines, as well as a combination vaccine that contains both. At the meeting, the ACIP voted 8 to 3 recommending children 12 months through 3 years be immunized for varicella separately from MMR, rather than with the combination vaccine, for the first dose. The MMRV vaccine would still remain an option for administration of the second dose in children aged 4 and older. Additionally, prelicensure study data were presented demonstrating a higher rate of fever and measles-like rashes among children receiving the first dose of the MMRV vaccine vs those receiving first doses of the MMR vaccine and varicella vaccine.
