Language comprehension includes background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge. These considerations will be further addressed in the discussion of the partner language space later in this article. This extended time for phonics and decoding also limits the time bilingual teachers have to address literacy development in the partner language. Recognizing where English and Spanish language pedagogy intersect is of critical importance to bilingual teachers.
