At its meeting in Walferdange on Monday evening, the National Council of the CSV voted by a large majority, over 90%, in favour of enshrining voluntary abortion as a “freedom” in the constitution. The CSV thus reaffirmed its “clear commitment to women’s rights and their freedom of choice”, according to a press release issued Monday evening. On Monday, 6 October, the new amendment to enshrine the “right to freedom of abortion” instead of the “right to abortion” in the constitution will be discussed in the chamber’s institutions committee. Differing opinions within the DPOn 15 September, CSV MPs on the institutions committee had already opposed Marc Baum’s (Déi Lénk) proposal to enshrine abortion as a “right” in the constitution. Barbara Agostino, in contrast, said she would leave the party if the DP voted against enshrining abortion in the constitution.
