Stony Brook University debuted its new Commercial Licensing and Express IP terms for Applied Research (CLEAR-IP) program on Aug. 28. Dr. Kevin Gardner, the vice president for research and innovation, explained that the University holds the rights to the research and intellectual property created by its faculty and staff. Companies are granted control over all intellectual property management and sublicensing, while Stony Brook retains rights for internal research, educational purposes and publication. Lastly, the traditional option offers companies non-exclusive research rights and a short window to negotiate a commercial license. Adam DeRosa, executive director of operations in the Office for Research and Innovation, shared that CLEAR-IP aims to accommodate the best interests of outside industries and Stony Brook University.
