A coalition of 20 states is speaking out in defense of mifepristone, calling the federal government’s recent review of the abortion medication politically driven and scientifically unfounded. New York Attorney General Letitia James and 19 other attorneys general issued a joint statement on September 29, pushing back against the FDA’s decision to revisit the safety and accessibility of mifepristone. The move follows comments from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and FDA Commissioner Martin Makary, who launched a review of the drug’s approval status. “For more than 25 years, mifepristone has been used safely and effectively in the United States and globally,” the coalition said. Those include actions against anti-abortion organizations, efforts to expand emergency care, and campaigns to remove what she calls outdated restrictions on mifepristone.
