As King Charles and Lord Snowdon visit an exhibition on Queen Marie of Romania, who was the dazzling royal?
['Paul Kenyon']
Tatler
Marie’s train flew across the snow-capped mountains into the newly formed Kingdom of Romania in January 1893, at the very moment Bram Stoker was writing Dracula back home in London. Unworldly, innocent, and dressed in a violet and gold cape chosen by her mother, Marie had just married the uptight Crown Prince Ferdinand of Romania, and was off to meet her new in-laws for the first time in Bucharest. Her transformation began in the field hospitals of the Second Balkan War, when Romanian troops were dying in their thousands.
