Through what Rower calls a “soul-searching effort,” the architect Jacques Herzog, along with Thomas Collins, the executive director of the Barnes, landed on a solution: Calder Gardens. Stefan Ruiz Oudolf’s focus on plants is one reason architect Jacques Herzog collaborated with him on the Calder Gardens. A Dutch garden designer, Oudolf is renowned for his wild and wispy aesthetic, seasonal consciousness, and seductive, high-density plantings, which emphasize perennials, bulbs, grasses, ferns, and small shrubs. Oudolf prefers not to refer to himself as an artist (he uses the terms “gardener” and “garden designer”), but -others see his work differently.
